It was with a small number of associates that the Rio de Janeiro State Supermarket Association (ASSERJ) was born, more precisely in 1963, one year after the supermarket sector was defined and regulated in the country. ASSERJ has represented the supermarket sector in Rio de Janeiro for over 55 years, defending the interests of its members before public and private bodies, offering specialized services and promoting the development of the sector through training, innovation and institutional representation. Throughout its history, ASSERJ has consolidated its position as a benchmark in the sector, contributing to the professionalization of the Rio de Janeiro supermarket retail sector and to the economic and social development of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Our History

Created with the aim of strengthening and defending the state's supermarket chain, ASSERJ has served its main purpose well. For more than five decades, representing and defending the interests of the sector, ASSERJ has acquired know-how in the supermarket sector, offering its members training courses, lectures, consultancy and advice in the legal area, human resources policy, loss prevention, safe food, marketing, as well as many other activities relevant to the sector.

Our importance

The supermarket sector is responsible for countless formal jobs in the state and in the country: there are more than 10 million employees on the store floor and also on the staff, according to the Brazilian Supermarket Association (ABRAS).

 

In line with all this importance, ASSERJ aims to:

 

  • Bring together businesspeople established in the State of Rio de Janeiro who carry out the activity of Supermarkets and the like in the supply chain and retail trade, with the aim of protecting the interests of the State;
  • To value the interests of supermarkets in the state of Rio de Janeiro and other members of the supply and consumption chain, promoting their strengthening and publicizing the importance of the sector in the development of the state;
  • To encourage free enterprise, the free market, free competition, competitiveness and the need for a competitive spirit;
